Brent’s 2¢

If you have been reading your newsletter, or attending the general meetings, you have heard a new phrase introduced into the vernacular of the Springfield Contractors Association: Generation Next. I would like to familiarize you with this concept and the group who represents it.
Generation Next is born from necessity and to some degree inevitability. The board of directors, led by then President David Foreman recognized that the active membership of the SCA was not getting younger. The companies that comprise SCA membership have young, energetic, intelligent employees, and the board of directors wants to engage them, or more importantly immerse them into the association. So we reached out to some already active SCA members who could possibly help steer this idea into fruition. This core of active members brought together a group of similarly aged contractors, subcontractors, designers, suppliers and associates from within the SCA membership to form Generation Next.
I mentioned that necessity and inevitability were two key ingredients to the inception of Generation Next. Necessity tells us that if the SCA is to not only thrive, but actually survive, integration of the future of the construction industry into the association is a must. We have seen organizations that withered for lack of legacy. A stronger association is created with the mesh of experience and novelty; of knowledge and adaptability; of established relationships and knowing the latest technologies. Inevitability tells us that the future leaders of our industry…will… lead…in the future…hence the title “future leaders.” If the established trust of the SCA has nothing to leave this next generation, or if what we have to leave is unwanted detritus, the Springfield Contractors Association will not be a part of anybody’s future.
So, that is the genesis of Generation Next – it is an investment. It is not an entity separate from the association, but a group of people working within. It is a movement. It is turning the idea of future leadership into leadership now. In the short time since its inception, young men of Generation Next have fully immersed themselves into the SCA. They have joined committees, they have held new events, they are revamping existing events, and they are bringing the organization up-to-date. The core of this group has reached out to the rest of the membership to get involved. Doug Fronick and Chris Lucas adeptly addressed the attendees of the May breakfast meeting. I’m going to ask for your involvement as well. Plug your people in to what Generation Next has happening. Help sponsor events. Support the scholarship fund. Investment into Generation Next is an investment that pays both immediate AND future dividends for the Springfield Contractors Association, but more importantly, for your own company. That is my two cents. — Brent
