August Board Meeting Summary

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION AT THE AUGUST 20 BOARD MEETING:

President Jerry Hackleman called the meeting to order at the Tower Club. Seventeen Board members were present. The Minutes, Treasurer’s Report and eight new members were accepted. Attendance and ticket sales were up at the Pig Roast but not as much as anticipated with the unprecendented high temperature of only 75 degrees. The Summer Golf Outing drew 50% more golfers than last year but the morning session was disappointing with only 24 participants. Next year we will offer a morning session at the Spring Outing, but not in August. We are also looking into a third Outing, perhaps in October.
The Employment Service saw a slight increase in the number of registrations this month. Several members are looking for Superintendents and Project Managers, but current registrants do not have this experience.
The AIA/Government Liaison Committee reported they discussed the need for more and or stricter licensing requirements to weed out unqualified contractors. City Utilities reported several new subdivisions are under construction. The County reported add-ons at several subdivisions and also discussed the hiring freeze that leaves several positions unfilled. The group discussed how the failure of Amendment 7 will affect roads and bridges in our area. Public Works reported on the progress of several projects including lowering the wall at Jefferson and Bennett, work on South National and on Republic Road. The new bus terminal is in design. A demonstration parking lot will be constructed in the Government Plaza. Excavation permits will require right-of-way permits for traffic control beginning in August or September. Change orders for City contracts will have to be signed by the original engineers on the projects. Phase II of the infiltration reduction program will start soon to reduce rainwater leaking into the sewer system.
It was reported at the MSU/SCA Liaison Committee that student enrollment is up on campus. With the closing of Sunvilla Tower this fall in preparation of a renovation, it has put the other residence halls into an overflow condition. The renovation of Sunvilla will include the installation of a fire suppression system, kitchen upgrades, and updating of the finishes. The construction cost is estimated at $9 million and is currently set to be released September 11 for bidding on October 2. Plans for Phase II of the renovation of the second floor of the Plaster Student Union are now available for bidding and this project has a construction estimate of $650,000. Construction continues on campus with the Welcome Center at Bear Boulevard and National Avenue being built by Wright Construction and the Occupational Therapy Building on Cherry Street and Holland Avenue being constructed by DeWitt & Associates. The four athletic and recreational fields ($27M project budget) are finishing up with the field hockey, track/soccer complex and sand volleyball complex now open to the students. The new east bleachers at the football stadium will be ready for the first home football game. The University is working hard at getting projects to close out in a timely fashion and appear to be having some successes.
The R-XII Liaison Committee reported no date has been set for bidding the renovations at Hickory Hills. Fremont is being re-designed and should be ready in February. The committee discussed the possibility that manpower and materials costs may be higher than in the original bids regardless of changes in design.
The Regional Construction Bidding Forecast Forum on September 19 is shaping up. Only 6% of those who received the survey (18 of 259) have responded. Detail on projects is not needed: only the dollar amount, when the project will bid and whether it is a civil project or a building. See the story in this issue for more details.
The Board discussed repairs and maintenance at the SCA Building. A small group will meet with the Realtor to discuss renewing our listing.
The new Instructor of Construction Technology at OTC, John Curtis, will be part of the Program at the September 2 Meeting along with Neal Callahan, Head of the Technology and Construction Department at MSU. Mr. Curtis will be working with his Advisory Committee to re-energize the program. SCA’s Workforce Development Committee will also be available to him recruit and train students for construction jobs.
The Chicken BBQ Scholarship Fundraiser has already received over $10,000 in Sponsorship pledges. Exit 70 (MM/B) on I-44 is closed so attendees will have to find an alternate route.
The Board unanimously agreed to start Board Meetings at 11:30 instead of noon.
Mailout ballots were opened and tabulated (see story in this issue).
Generation Next and Beck/Killian have arranged tours of the new patient tower at Cox South on September 25 with a hosted social hour to follow.
The local chapter of AIA has asked us to hold a reception for students in the design competition to be held during the Regional Conference in October.
The Program and Presentations Committee will meet with the General Manager of the Tower Club to discuss some issues of concern before we choose a venue for 2015 Meetings.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
