May 21 Board Meeting

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION AT MAY 21 BOARD MEETING:
Vice President Brent Beattie called the meeting to order. Seventeen Board Members were present. The Minutes, Treasurer’s Report and three new members were approved.
The Spring Golf Outing drew 50% more participation than last year and netted over $10,000, not including $1,130 from skins and the students’ short shot for scholarships.
The Employment Referral Service reported several member companies have placed ads looking for help, but response has been minimal. We are receiving good information for the postings on the Bid Date Calendar. We are winnowing duplicate information.
The Executive Director reported continued progress on using new communications technology. Efforts continue to collect remaining 2014 dues. Reaching out to prospective members works best when the effort is peer-to-peer, with current members encouraging good companies they work with to consider joining SCA.
The AIA/Government Liaison committee reported the County sees a downtrend in permits, although January was strong. Tax revenues for first quarter 2014 are down and the County cannot hire until next year, even though they’ve lost another inspector. The City reported commercial permits continue to increase. Fifty-one projects came to the City in March. Of those, review was completed in 10 days for 81% and 90% were completed in 11 days. Inspections are going smoothly. The City prefers that architects and engineers use larger sheets for updates rather than 11×17 or 8½ x 11 sheets. According to architects, some Owners prefer smaller sheets. City Utilities reviewed 70 new or revised plans in March including five new subdivisions in design and one under construction. More new subdivisions are planned. CU is taking applications from contractors and subcontractors who wish to qualify to do some installations for CU. The AIA reported a planning meeting was to be held May 14 regarding the Central States Conference in October. They are looking for Allied Members to help with the conference. AIA also announced they had 45 submissions for Design Awards this year and winners would be announced at an event on May 2. The committee was asked to consider “Buy America” restrictions now included in some specs.
The Generation Next Mixer on May 14 was more successful than almost everyone expected it to be. Between 50 and 60 people enjoyed complimentary keg beer and nibbles. Expenses were fully covered by sponsorships. Using Facebook allowed them to keep everyone updated regarding the event. The group will help with Pig Roast ticket sales as they gear up for their next big event, the Chicken BBQ Scholarship Fundraiser. The Board also discussed the logistics of planning and running a fishing tournament.
The MSU Liaison Committee reported nothing is out for bid right now although the Occupational Therapy building (steel construction, approximately $17 million) should be out in a couple of weeks. It will be located next to McQueary Family Health Sciences Hall. Design for Sunvilla Tower is moving ahead with bidding expected in late August. Mechanical upgrades and life safety changes will be included. Pummill Hall renovations has been awarded to DeWitt and an award to construct the Welcome Center should be made in June. Weekly (or at least monthly) meetings as a project approaches completion are recommended as the best way to avoid delay during closing out. The University will also put a heavier emphasis on pre-construction meetings to discuss timing and manpower requirements for improved efficiency during construction. The University asked about liquidated damages and their impact during bidding. Determining what these should be to assure MSU gets a project done without been overly restrictive is a constant battle.
The R-XII Liaison Committee reported that the bid on Sherwood came in under what was expected and Fremont came in over. Most maintenance projects are already underway. The District’s specs and how they vary from project to project were discussed along with “Buy America” requirements especially as they relate to certain materials such as drywall and copper products.
Results of the survey of members will be compiled and common themes identified and will then be posted on the website. Members will be notified when the information is available.
Breakfast General Meetings must start earlier to be finished by 8 am. We will try registration at 6:45, food at 7 and program to start no later than 7:15. The next Meeting on June 3 will be a traditional dinner meeting with Social Hour at 5 pm. The Tower Club is hosting a keg of beer for the June Meeting but a full cash bar will also be available.
The Pig Roast Committee is already working to make the event at the Fairgrounds more enjoyable by moving under the trees, with the pavilion available as a backup in case of rain. Young members are being trained to assume responsibility for the event. SCA will again buy a Fair Sponsorship in support of the Fairgrounds and the community. Our goal is to sell 800 tickets this year. Generation Next will help with logistics and ticket selling.
The Construction Bidding Forecast Forum committee will be reactivated to plan this year’s symposium, tentatively scheduled for September 19 at the Darr Agricultural Center.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was declared adjourned.
