November 17, 2014 Board Meeting Summary

NOVEMBER 19 2014 BOARD MEETING SUMMARY:

President Jerry Hackleman called the meeting to order. Fourteen Board Members were present. The Minutes, Treasurer’s Report and six new members were approved.
2015 dues will go up to $360 (a dollar a day with five days free). This will bring SCA more in line with other associations in our industry and allow repairs and maintenance at the SCA Building. We continue to look for ways to add value to SCA membership.
The AIA/Government Liaison Committee reported the City’s inspection program seems to be working well. A technician is modifying the program to address issues that have been raised by users and is planning to distribute a questionnaire and/or create some small groups to identify issues that should be addressed. The text of the 2015 codes will reflect current industry practices and should be ready for public review by December 1 and should go to Council in January. City Utilities reported that Gary Gibson is now the Associate General Manager – Economic Development and SpringNet, while Dean Thompson is now in charge of the water department. The Engineers are back in the TecHouse now. Regarding the inclusion of CU fees when estimating building costs, CU recommends the architects get plans to CU soon enough to get a price, plan for the owner to pay CU costs or put an allowance in the bid for those costs. The City is looking for ways to encourage architects to put plans together well in a timely manner to expedite the process.
The Missouri State University Liaison Committee reported they continued discussion of subcontractor lists and how soon they need to be made available once a bid has been accepted. On-going projects include remodeling of Pummill Hall and work on the O’Reilly Clinical Health Sciences Center and the Welcome Center. Upcoming projects will include a room remodeling in Ellis Hall ($110,000), Temple Hall ($2,000,000) and Meyer Library ($500,000). Work on the renovation of the Professional Building will be in phases so the building can remain occupied. When money becomes available, Glass Hall will receive a $25 million renovation/expansion. Although not part of the committee report, it was announced that professors Dianne and Kerry Slattery will be retiring and leaving the MSU Department of Technology and Construction Management.
The Employment Referral Service reported several new registrants have been processed, some with good experience.
Comments from the Board regarding the Salute to Design & Construction Banquet included a comment that the stage was dark. The food and service were ok. It would be interesting to hear more about each scholarship recipient and each award winner. Videos of the project in progress would add to the understanding of why it was chosen to win. The table decoration contest is good – it gets people moving around the room but should be given more attention during the event. Clif Smart did a good job accepting the Developer of the Year Award, especially talking about each component being one cog in the wheel of the construction process. The format is good, moves too quickly maybe. More feel-good stories (every day heroes) would be welcome. Recognize retirees during the year along with the deceased. A video of the students in the competition would be good.
A current member has been using a small part of the empty C-space on a part-time basis. A small group of board members will meet with him to either work out a reasonable pro-rated amount plus utilities or convince him to become a tenant and rent the whole space.
The Christmas Open House on December 5 will feature hosted beer and wine. Party Planning Plus will provide party food as well as labor during the event.
The 2015 Budget will be submitted for review next month. It will include money for a new roof. We may have a special “raise the roof” fundraiser.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
