October 15, 2014 Board Meeting Summary

OCTOBER 15, 2014 BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

President Jerry Hackleman called the meeting to order. Sixteen Board Members were present. The Minutes, Treasurer’s Report and one new member was approved.

The 2014 budget was based on renting the C-space for a half-year, which has not happened. Although we still have a good reserve, dues have not been increased since 2005 when they went from $250 annually to $300. Dues for 2015 will be $360 per year: a dollar a day and five days free. The prorated amount new members pay will also be restructured. Suggestions for adding value to membership were discussed, including the possibility of making tickets to SCA events less expensive for members than for others.

The AIA/Government Liaison Committee reported a reception for the finalists for the Director of Public Works will be held. The City (Tim Smith and Kirk Juranas) is studying how to standardize change orders. Tim discussed the difficulty in standardizing sewer contracts in satellite communities. Commercial and residential permitting is up, revenues are up. The City is looking at amending the codes regarding fall protection. They will be taking 2012 codes to 2015. The City and CU are more involved in plan review than previously. CU announced a 68-lot subdivision is planned for Battlefield. They will begin installing smart meters, first electrical, then gas and sewer. The number of plans reviewed hit a new high in August. Contractors have asked CU to help with estimating utility costs for bidding purposes. Options include the Owner pay utility costs (or make an allowance), delay the bids until accurate costs can be obtained or using a ball park number for everyone bidding the job. CU will continue the discussion with the Architects. Committee members hope more architects will participate once the regional conference is behind them.

The Employment Referral Service reported three members are looking for office help and several more need superintendents. We are getting very few registrants. Students, including one from OTC, are looking for internships.

The MSU Liaison Committee did not meet. The Office of Planning, Design and Construction website shows that SunVilla was bid and KCI was low. The Board of Trustees will take action today (October 15). The University asked for a base bid plus 14 alternates. An upgrade of the University’s telecommunications system went out for bid a month ago, but they have not announced if the contract was awarded.

The R-12 Liaison Committee reported they discussed the schedule: Kickapoo – still waiting for FEMA; Hickory Hills – should go out this fall; Fremont – may go out next spring, maybe March. The District is watching labor and material prices, hoping costs will go down. They expect changes with the District’s new leadership team.

The Bid Forecast Forum went well, but did not draw the attendance the first one did.
Discussion at the wrap-up meeting covered topics such as whether we should do it more often? Send out the survey quarterly or biannually? Results could be announced informally, without a big meeting. The immediate six months are more accurate than the last six months of an annual forecast. The Chamber will help in any way. Lyndsay did a great job. The summary Jerry and Brent put together for the June Meeting was helpful and should be repeated. Panel discussions are better received by the audience than individual speakers.

Comments related to the forum have included some criticism of the Bid Date Calendar and how it works. Most of these comments appear to come from people who have not used the calendar lately, if at all. A suggestion was made that the SCA office actively contact every Architect, General Contractors, Engineer and Owner and explain the calendar and how to use it to at least one contact person in each firm. Bill Bergmann volunteered to be that contact at Butler, Rosenbury & Partners. The statement was made that no one will use the calendar until everyone knows it is accurate. We can solicit testimonials from satisfied users to promote it. It can be used as a different way to market the members’ businesses.

The Nominating Committee’s recommendations for 2015 officers were accepted: Brent Beattie, President; Dave Roberston, Vice President; Joe Tucker, Treasurer; Mike DeLong, Secretary; Jerry Hackleman, Past President; Mike Textor, General Counsel and Bill Adams, Advisor to the President.

The Developer of the Year Committee reported the Developer has been selected and also
announced the three finalists for the Project Team of the Year. The information must be kept confidential until the Banquet.

The coop ad in the Salute issue of the Business Journal will be modified to include Generation Next. Board members are encouraged to attend the Mixer and Banquet.

The tours of the Cox South patient tower and mixer afterward were very successful with Generation Next SCA and the Young Architects Forum working closely together. The two will collaborate again next week (October 22) on the reception for student competitors at the AIA regional conference. Dave Robertson is recruiting sponsors who will share the costs. A continuing issue for Generation Next members is the perception that they can’t be on committees. It was noted that there are not too many Owners under the age of 40.

There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
