September 17, 2014 Board Meeting Summary

SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

President Jerry Hackleman called the meeting to order. Twelve Board Members were present. Two guests from AIA were also present to discuss design-build legislation for political entities. on September 17, 2014, at the SCA Building. The Minutes, Treasurer’s Report and two new members were approved.
The Chicken BBQ Scholarship Fundraiser netted about $3000 more this year than last, thanks to multiple sponsorships. CSI members, MSU students and Generation Next members were instrumental in the success of the event. The half-time kicking contest provided extra entertainment. The small display of three restored cars drew a great deal of attention and we expect more participation next year. The Rugby Club has already found an opponent so next year’s BBQ will feature a real game instead of an exhibition. SCA’s share of the profit will go directly into the Scholarship Endowment Fund, which should exceed $38,000 once these monies are deposited.
The Employment Referral Service reported a few members want to hire superintendents, but we don’t have any registered at this time.
The AIA/Government Liaison Committee reported the City’s permitting volume is slowing down. However, 90% are handled in 10 days and 80% are completed in two days. An emphasis on inspecting dangerous buildings may affect other inspections. Public Works reported they rejected the last bid on Republic Road improvements and the project should come out again in January. They are updating their standard specs. David O’Dell reported the County has hired another inspector since revenue is up. City Utilities announced the schedule of rate hikes for electricity and water. Electric and gas personnel are moving back into the TecHouse. OTC reported they have a new construction department head: John Curtis has been in an administrative position but has construction experience. He would like to find some projects for jobsite visits for students. AIA members are preparing for the central states region conference. Generation Next will work with the Young Architects Forum to host a Mixer on October 22 for student competitors.
The MSU Liaison Committee reported Sunvilla Tower is out for bid with a budget of approximately $10 million, along with some telecommunications projects. Work continues on the Occupational Therapy building, the Welcome Center and Pummill Hall. The athletic and recreational fields were completed on time and are in full use at all four venues. The University awarded 75 separate construction contracts for about $53 million over the last twelve months (September 2013 to September 2014) but it looks like the next year will be about half that. Renovations of Glass Hall are expected to cost about $25 million, while $5 million is the expected cost of renovations at the Professional Building. The committee also discussed retainage and revisions of the University’s front end documents and general conditions.
The R-XII Liaison Committee welcomed the new School District financial officer, Carol Embree, to the meeting. District employees are judging the bidding climate when they put out their projects to bid. Committee members look forward to working with the new administration.
The Bidding Forecast Forum will take place Friday, September 19.
The contract with the listing agent for the c-space has been renewed. The floor plan is available on our website.
The Program Committee met with the Tower Club to discuss the sound system, service and room layout. Prices will not change for 2015 and we will continue to use the venue for monthly meetings.
Mark Gambon was elected by the members at the September 2 General Meeting and Mike DeLong and Gil Riemann were elected by the Board for one-year at-large terms on the 2015 Board of Directors. The Board approved a contribution to help the MSU Construction students attend the annual competition in Nebraska.
The Christmas Open House will be at the SCA Building on the first Friday in December. Sponsors so far are Prestressed Casting and Springfield Ready Mix Company. Sponsorship cost is based on the number of Sponsors and the total expense but will not exceed $250.
Payment request forms and the problems created by non-standard forms were discussed. There appears to be no easy resolution of these issues.
Generation Next will be hosting tours of the Cox South patient tower with a mixer to follow on September 25.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
